Previous Next $5 Liberty

Minted from 1839 to 1907, the design of the $5 Liberty was created by Christian Gobrecht. Five-dollar Liberty gold coins were the pocket currency of daily life for much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Often overlooked in favor of larger-denomination U.S. gold coins with greater gold content, these smaller coins are an excellent value. The vast majority were heavily worn in circulation or melted down during gold confiscation of 1933. Out of the millions originally minted, only a tiny fraction has survived in uncirculated condition
